The Ghost of the Suicidal Squirrel

I had the most horrible experience on Monday morning. Seriously. It was tragic.

I was on my way into work, quite sleepy due to the fact that it was 6:45am, I had been in the car for nearly an hour, and, well, it was Monday. That makes for a tired me. However, I was not so tired as to be driving poorly or to not be paying attention. So, I saw the adorable little squirrel run out into the road as I approached. As any animal loving person would, I hit the brakes allowing time for the squirrel to go on by. He did and I began to move back to my original speed...HOWEVER...this is where the tragedy began...that darn squirrel just simply DID NOT WANT TO LIVE! No, REALLY! As soon as he got across he jerked his little self around and ran RIGHT in front of my tire! There was nothing I could do! I felt that horrible "bump." I murdered that poor, innocent squirrel.

I have NEVER hit anything before! I have been driving for 14 years and never ONCE have I hit an animal of any kind! A pole, a stone wall, yes...but NEVER a living creature!!! I was very close to work, so I pulled into the parking lot before the tears got too bad to see! I called my husband, who was worried until I told him why I was so upset...LOL! Although, because he is wonderful, caring, and understanding...he did not get mad that I had woken him up and he told me that it was okay and that there was nothing I could do. I was still pretty sad about it, but, alas...Sean was right...there really wasn't anything I could do. I am officially a squirrel killer. I just need to live with that now. (Although, I had to smile when I was able to avoid the two that ran out in front of me this morning...at least it doesn't look like a habit!)

So...yesterday I got home from work and for some reason I didn't go into my scrapbook room, which I usually do shortly after arriving home. Sean told me that I should go in there....he got me something. Ooo! Fun! A present! For no reason! I love those! WELL....

This is what I found:

Suicidal Squirrel

And the OTHER side of his little ATC sign reads:

Suicidal Squirrel

HA! HA! HA! Very Funny!

So...I now have the ghost of my squirrel living in my scrapbook room. LOL! At least he is cute! The only thing is...Maggie (black lab #1) was VERY interested in Mr. Squirrel! We'll see how long he is mine! LOL!

sorry about your squirrel!! i was devastated when I hit a raccoon once. My friends had me so upset because they kept saying I killed the whole ecological system on Prince George.

Your hubby is a sweetie to do that for you!

Oh my goodness, your DH is so darned sweet!!

I wish I could say that I have never hit an animal, but it would be a lie. We live in a rural area, I have hit 6 or 7 deer, many squirrels, a cat, and a dog. None were avoidable though.
It makes me sad too.

You have a very caring dh. :) That's probably something mine would do if that had happened to me. At least you didn't swerve and have an accident that caused you injury. That's something to be thankful for.

Sean wins MAJOR points for that one, Jennifer! Give him an extra hug from me!

I ran over a dog that had just been hit by another car one time on the highway. I was boxed in on both sides and didn't have a choice. The feeling of that thud still makes me shudder!

I'm so sorry, but I'm ROFLMBO!! Oh, that's just too funny! Not that you hit the squirrel, but your DH's note on the stuffed squirrel. I've had kamikaze birds fly at me before, and there really is nothing you can do. Tell Sean I love the stuffed squirrel, nice touch! ;)

It's a terrible feeling to hit the smallest of animals. {{{HUGS}}} Love the little guy in your scrap room.

i hate mondays too!

so sorry for your trauma, too! i had a squirrel commit suicide in front of my van one day, too :( just thankful my kids weren't with me or i would've never heard the end of it.

and just be thankful you don't work with my mom. after an incident with a frog and a lawnmower (i know-ewww) she found cemetary markers in her yard for "ima toad" and "fred d. frog". and they think funeral directors have no sense of humor!

hope your week goes smoother!

Your hubby is a keeper!! I was hit by a bird once. I was driving down the road and it flew right into my antenna. Yup my antenna on my car. Boiyoiyoing! That antenna started flying side to side and it scared the crap out of me. LOL

Welcome to the Animal Killer with your car Club!

Why is it we feel guilty when something like that happens? I always feel bad when a bug splats on my windwhield! lol How sweet of DH to do that! How creative too!

I am so sorry for your accident, but your DH is right - there was nothing you could do. It was just "his time to go". I once hit a whole family of ducks crossing the interstate. I felt so horrible - but I couldn't very well slam on my brakes on the interstate! I still feel bad to this day and that was over 15 years ago. LOL
I laughed so hard at your "gift" from your DH. What a great guy you have there! TFS your story with us!
