We need to have a bit of a discussion. Yes, this is a rant post...I haven't done one in awhile, so I figure it's about time. But, for reals, people. This is serious stuff and we simply MUST get it out there. Chevron vs. Zigzag. You see, there is a big trend right now to use these patterns in paper crafting, fashion, home decor, etc. right now. They are HUGE. However, it seems that the two terms are often conflated and, quite frankly misused. You see, a chevron is an insignia. It is a simple "v" shape formed by two lines coming together. Simple. And SINGULAR. A zigzag is a series of "v" shapes coming together in a stripe. THUS...

P.S. I want these zig zag shoes. Just say'n.
And for all of you dorks like me out there....Chevron...
Those last three photos are neither chevrons, nor zigzags, however, they are really pretty to look at. Just say'n.
So...to sum it all up. PLEASE, PLEASE, PULLLEEEAAAASE don't call zigzags chevrons. K? K. Thanks. I truly appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Together we can make a difference. I feel better already. Just say'n. Don't forget to check out my Friends With Flair Friday post below this one. It's fun. Just say'n.
Bye now.
Jingle out.
I never did and now I never will!!! Valerie
ReplyDeleteHa, love the Stargate chevron :) Chevron one encoded....:)
ReplyDeleteWe ARE sisters, you know. Go check out MY rant blog. http://thisgrandmaknowsgrammar.blogspot.com/ I haven't announced it yet. Just needed to START it so I could get things out of my system. I suspect if I DO have readers, I will find a lot of people who think I'm a snob. Nope! NOT AT ALL! Certain things just happen to drive me BONKERS! I say, "RIGHT ON!" to the chevron vs zigzags issue!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Some people really just don't know and need to have it explained to them.
ReplyDeletetoo funny!
ReplyDeleteAMEN, Sistah!!!
ReplyDeleteI DO like me some Stargate boys....Just sayin'...

ReplyDeleteI'm so confused. So all these people showing zig zags and calling them chevron stripes and such should be calling them zig zags? Is that right? What if they call it a chevron stripe? And I haven't used chevron our zig zag, I'm so out of the loop :)
ReplyDeleteMan, I am still laughing at your comment concerning the last three photos! My former math teacher would give us an "A+" (or the French equivalent) in exchange for Richard Dean Anderson's products :D
ReplyDeleteawesome!!! where did you find those shoes??? Peace, Mary Helen
ReplyDeleteGood point!! I think I participated in a "chevron" challenge and low and behold-I actually used zig-zags! LOL! Now I know. Thanks so much and I LOVE all of your photo examples! :0)

Well I had no idea, LOL. One question though, is it ok if I call it strung together chevrons??? Ha ha. Fun post which I was very much looking forward to. and now I feel so much more knowledgeable.

I love you Jingle you know that! You always make me laugh. I do know the difference between Chevron and zig-zag but I am so glad you had a little rant and told everyone else :) By the way, I want those shoes too and I am glad you added the last pictures cuz they are nice to look at. I have been crushing on Richard Dean Anderson since he was in General Hospital I think back in the day. Showing my age I think. Take care dear.

ReplyDeleteBe sure you don't look at my chevron, um I mean zig zag layout I posted on my blog earlier this month. I may or may not have mis-named it ;)
Oh, and thanks for visiting my blog and leaving such a sweet comment!
LOL...so I just spent a bunch of time googling chevron vs zig zag...this is what happens when the girl that wakes up at 3 am takes a 2 hour nap after work inbetween carting kids to their social functions...So aren't zig zags multiple chevrons? I gotta go to bed..
ReplyDeleteSo worth the visit today! LMAO....just sayin!
ReplyDeleteomgosh! Sitting here laughing because I was totally trying to figure out where the chevrons or zig zags were in those hotties photos! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI love you! You always crack me up, xo
ReplyDeleteSo glad someone is speaking out!
ReplyDeleteThey should bring StarGate back. Not that wussy 3rd version. StarGate Atlantis was cool, too. Maybe a couple of replicators could help keep my work area clean?
ReplyDeleteJust came over from the Moxie Fab blog and you are absolutely right! Oh, and thanks for posting those three pictures at the end.
ReplyDeletei JUST made a quilt top, and wasn't sure whether to call it a zig zag or a chevron, so i did some searching and found your post - hilarious!
ReplyDeleteYou're hilarious! Congrats on being a Moxie Fabber!! I'll keep my chevrons and zigzags in check :)

ReplyDeleteThis post totally had me cracking up Jingle!! Picture after picture to hammer it home, and I totally love the finish on the Stargate reference!! Sadly I think people will continue to call them chevrons instead of zig-zags, and it's become so embedded now that I think it might be here to stay!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this!!! I was thinking "I wonder why people all of the sudden are calling zig-zags chevrons?" I thought maybe it was just the hip new term to use or something, I didn't know there was a difference. So I googled "chevron vs zig-zag" and your post came up. Now I know, thanks!
ReplyDeleteJingle, I haven't started stamping when you had this post! Just saying! ;)
